The Medology Elective is an annual mission trip bringing together medical and dental students, professionals, and anyone with a passion for making a difference. Each year, we travel to communities in need, delivering healthcare, empowering local populations, and supporting community-led initiatives. This is not just for healthcare professionals—whether you’re assisting with patient care, contributing to educational efforts, or serving in another meaningful way, everyone has a role to play in creating lasting change.
At Medology, the vision of giving back has always been at the heart of everything we do. Over the years, we’ve built a thriving community of medical and dental students, doctors, dentists, and passionate individuals—leaders in their fields who share a commitment to making a difference. From the beginning, we’ve known this community was destined for more: to use our skills and resources to serve those who need it most. The Medology Elective is the realisation of that vision—a step towards creating a ripple of global impact. And this is just the beginning. With every trip, every effort, and every life touched, we’re building the foundation for a future where Medology leads the way in compassionate, transformative care around the world.
In 2024, senior members of our dental team, Bilal Sheraz and Haroon Sharif, travelled to the Rahma House Orphanage in Osmaniye, Türkiye, under the guidance of Dr Asmaa Rachid, a distinguished Canadian dentist renowned for her humanitarian contributions. This initiative focused on providing essential dental care to over 150 orphans from East Turkistan, Palestine, Syria, and Türkiye, addressing an urgent need in this underserved population. With over $10,000 worth of treatment delivered—calculated using Canadian standards of care—this effort made a tangible difference in improving oral health outcomes. The DMFT (Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth) average score of 3.98 in these children starkly highlighted the disparities compared to the UK average of 0.80 in children under 5. By bridging this gap, the Medology team showcased the profound impact of targeted care, compassion, and international collaboration in transforming lives.
This mission was not only a chance to provide life-changing care but also an incredible learning opportunity for our team to grow and give back in a challenging environment. Working without restorative motors to open cavities made us truly appreciate the equipment we often take for granted, while pushing us to adapt and innovate under limited resources. It was an unparalleled experience to upskill, take on greater responsibility, and manage a higher volume of cases and procedures than we would typically encounter. Beyond the clinical benefits, the trip fostered invaluable connections and mentorship, with special thanks to Dr Asmaa Rachid and Dr Ayman for their guidance and support. In 2025, we are excited to take the Medology Elective to new heights, returning to Skardu and other key locations in Pakistan to provide holistic support that extends far beyond healthcare. This year’s mission will combine dental and medical care with spiritual outreach, teaching, and uplifting community programmes—bringing together compassion, knowledge, and healing in every form. With the generous support of Saint Visage, a leading UK dental chain, we aim to create an even greater impact, addressing both urgent healthcare needs and fostering long-term community empowerment. Provisionally scheduled during the Easter break, the 2025 Medology Elective will span 10 days and is open to all who wish to join.
