Selection Process

Hull York Medical School uses a four-stage selection process:

Stage 1: Academic Review

Applications are reviewed to ensure that the minimum academic requirements are met.

Stage 2: Scoring

Applicants are ranked based on the following criteria, making up a total of 100 points:

  • SJT (15 points)
  • UCAT score (35 points)
  • GCSE results (35 points)
  • Contextual data (15 points)

Important: SJT Band 4 applicants will be rejected.

Stage 3: Interview

Shortlisted applicants are invited to interview, where interview performance will be assessed.

Stage 4: Offer Decision

Overall interview score and contextual data are used to make the final offers.

Personal Statement

The personal statement is not scored but is reviewed. It may be taken into account during borderline applications or selection decisions. Applicants may be asked about claims made in the personal statement during the interview process, so it’s important to read it beforehand.

The Interview

The Hull York Medical School interview consists of several parts:

1. Group Exercise

  • Points: 22
  • Description: In a group of up to 10 candidates, you will discuss a scenario. This will assess your ability to work collaboratively, communicate, and articulate thoughts effectively.

2. Two Mini Interviews

  • Points: 17 per interview
  • Description: Two separate mini-interviews will test your understanding of current issues in medicine, your insight into a career in medicine, your critical thinking, and your personal qualities (e.g., empathy, resilience).
  • Preparation: You will be given your first question before entering and have 5 minutes to prepare.

3. Student Station

  • Points: 17
  • Description: Senior medical students will ask you questions about becoming a student doctor and joining the Hull York Medical School community.
  • Preparation: You will receive your first question before entering and have 5 minutes to prepare.

4. Individual Scenario Station

  • Points: 17
  • Description: You will watch a pre-recorded video simulating a character talking directly to you. You will be asked questions at two points during the video and once at the end. This will assess your ability to react and respond in a given situation.
  • Note: No medical knowledge is tested, and this is not a problem-solving station.

Academic Requirements

  • A-Levels: AAA, including Biology and Chemistry.
  • GCSEs: At least 6 passing GCSEs, including English Language and Maths, all at Grade 6/B or above.
  • SQA: AAAAB by the end of S5, including Chemistry and 2 from Biology, Maths, or Physics. BB at Advanced Higher in S6. At Nat 5 level, Grade B in Biology, Chemistry, English, and Maths.

Resits

  • A-Level resits are accepted from students who achieved BBB or higher in the first sitting.
  • GCSE resits are allowed to meet the entry requirement.
