Selection Process

Queen Mary University of London’s Barts Medical School uses a range of criteria to assess candidates for interview. Applicants who meet the following are selected for an interview based on a weighted score:

  • Achieving an overall score within the fourth decile range or above in the Old UCAT
  • Achieving a UCAS tariff of 152 (equivalent to A*AA at A-Level)

The weighted score may comprise a combination of UCAT score and UCAS tariff of the entry qualifications, either predicted or achieved.

Personal Statement

The personal statement does not form part of the assessment for interview selection at Barts. It is instead used to support the candidate during the interview process, but it is not scored.

    • Average UCAT score at interview: 2,796 (Band 2)

The Interview

The Barts interview consists of an online panel made up of two senior academic or clinical staff members, a medical student, and sometimes a lay selector. The following characteristics are evaluated during the interview:

  • Motivation and a realistic approach to medicine as a career
  • Initiative, resilience, and maturity
  • Teamwork abilities
  • Organizational skills and problem-solving abilities
  • Contribution to university life
  • Effective communication in a wide range of situations

Academic Requirements

  • A-Levels: A minimum of A*AA achieved in one sitting over a two-year study period. This must include Biology/Chemistry and another science. The A can be in any of the three subjects*.
  • GCSEs: All eligible candidates must have the following at GCSE Level:
    • Biology, Chemistry, English Language or Literature, and Maths at Grade 7 or above (777666).
    • The Science Double Award can substitute for all science subjects.

Resits

A-Level resits are only considered from applicants who are protected under the Equality and Diversity Act of 2010. Candidates must email smdadmissions@qmul.ac.uk by 1st September of the application year, detailing their reason.
